Small Christian Communities

The Small Christian Community (SCC) is a New Way of being Church and is the foundational base of the universal Catholic Church. It is not a church organisation, ministry or interest group. It is simply a small group of Catholics, living in the same neighbourhood, coming together as a community to live and share their faith with one another through prayer, worship, service, fellowship and mission.

The objective of an SCC is to help people within the community grow their faith, live the Gospel life and foster Christian love and support for each other in times of need.

The importance and characteristics of SCCs are emphasized by the late Pope John Paul II as follows:

"The Church as Family cannot reach all her possibilities as Church unless she is divided into communities small enough to foster close human relationships.

The characteristics of such communities are:

   a) they should be places engaged in evangelizing themselves, so that subsequently they can bring the Good News to others

b)  they should be communities which pray and listen to God’s Word

c)  they must encourage the members themselves to take responsibility  and to learn to live as Church

d)  they reflect on different human problems in light of the Gospel

e)  these communities are to be committed to living Christ’s love for  everybody, a love which transcends the limits of the natural solidarity of clans, tribes or other interest groups.”

Pope John Paul II, Apostolic Exhortation
“ Ecclesia in Africa” 1995

The SCC is a priority of both the Archdiocese and our parish and is open to all parishioners. As such, we strongly encourage you to take part in the activities of an SCC near your home. You automatically belong to an SCC in your neighborhood, by virtue of where you live.

If you have any questions about SCCs or their activities, please call or email the SCC leader in your neighborhood. For contact information, please click on the SCC Family Tree link.
