Although there is still a couple of months before the Church comes together to honour all our Saints, I have always believed in giving thanks and remembering them , especially our favourite Saints every day.

St Augustine of Hippo, my  personal favourite, is largely remembered for his inspiring conversion experience and celebrated for his enormous intellect and writings.  He is one of the most prominent doctors of the Catholic Church and on 28 August, we celebrate the life and legacy that this patron saint of brewers left us.

I first came to know about St Augustine through reading about his mother, St Monica. Intrigued by his personality and early life, I found  his conversion to be truly a work of God...a work that only God is capable of accomplishing. Through mindless browsing on the Internet or casual readings, I would always come across very thought-provoking, meaningful  and timely quotations by this great Saint. How I love his words, how they resonate within me.  They are  just so inspired by the Holy Spirit!

One day, after learning about the history of the Christian cemetery in St Joseph Church in Bukit Timah, I decided to travel more than 20 kilometres for this mini adventure. While I was there, I prayed for a deal I was negotiating to come to fruition, and after my prayer, just as I was walking down the stairs, I saw a tablet with a quote from St Augustine, "Ora Et Labora: Pray as though everything depended on God / Work as though everything depended on you".

Was God answering my prayer? I think so. And He seems to have a penchant to do through St Augustine.

Thank you my Lord. Thank you, St Augustine.

My much-loved quotations from St Augustine

  • "But my sin was this, that I looked for pleasures, beauty, and truth not in Him but in myself and His other creatures, and the search led me instead to pain, confusion and error."
  • "Faith is to believe what you do and not see, the reward of this faith is to see what you believe."
  • "God loves each of us as if there were only one of us."
  • "Seek not to understand that you may believe, but believe that you may understand."
  • "Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee."
  • "To fall in love with God is the greatest romance, to seek Him the greatest adventure; to find Him, the greatest human achievement."
