Singing Their Hearts Out
St Mary’s Choir has been performing in our church as far back as 1986. Aiming to evangelise and praise God through music and song, the choir today is about 30 to 40 strong. Theirs are the golden voices that add to our mass experience at the 6 pm service.
The choir meets once a week usually on Sundays at about 4 pm to practise. When having to perform at special masses such as Christmas, they meet even on weekdays to practise. Member, Alywin Tan says, "The Choir is really like a family, getting together to sing for God and his people."
The choir attracts members among our parishioners, who join the choir, partly because of their keen interest in music and singing. Others may join because of their friends and family members, who already are part of the group. Some come because the choir, as a Ministry serves as a strong anchor for them to grow in their faith.
Memorable occasions for the choir include performances at our parish’s special masses such as the Easter Vigil and Christmas.
The choir also goes out to visit the needy especially to the LC Home (Love and Care) in Siglap. “Charity is what every Christian is called to do, so those moments not only bring joy to the needy, but also fill our members cup,” says Alywin.
During, Advent and at Lent, we never fail to get together as a community to reflect and bond in fellowship.
This year, members visited LC Home during the Chinese New Year bringing some fun, laughter and gifts to the old folks residing there. As one of the Ministries in the church, St Mary’s Choir also participated in the Combined Choir for the Easter Vigil.
